Teden Mengi may well be the next star coming from the Manchester United conveyor belt, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left impressed by the young centre-back.

Mengi made his debut during last season, playing three times for the senior time. However, the young Mancunian wasn’t really given regular minutes to prove his worth.

Solskjaer is seemingly a big believer in Mengi, though. In a recent interview, the Baby Faced Assassin heaped the praise on the United starlet. The Norwegian claimed that Mengi ‘has something special in him’, while comparing him to Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt.

Check out what the United boss had to say here:

“We always had that in the back of our minds that our academy will provide players and Teden has definitely impressed me. It’s different trusting defenders on the big stage, of course it is,” Solskjaer told BBC Radio 5 Live, transcribed by Goal.

“You’ve got to make sure he’s ready for it, you see examples of Ajax, who play in a different league, but Matthijs de Ligt… they made him captain when he was 18. You can see something special in them. Teden’s got something special in him. It’s about picking the right moment to give him a chance.”

2020/21 set to be Mengi’s breakthrough term?

It could well be, particularly with no new centre-half signing on the horizon. We already know that Mengi will be given more first-team opportunities next campaign. Perhaps that’s why Solskjaer hasn’t invested in that area of the field.

This is definitely a massive confidence-booster for Mengi, who will be looking to follow a similar path to Mason Greenwood. The striker would only play one game in the 2018/19 campaign, but last season he was simply sensational.

Mengi has all the makings of the perfect defensive partner for Harry Maguire. Yes, he’ll need time to develop and grow, though where better to do that than Manchester United?

I’d imagine we’ll see him in the cup competitions first and foremost, with a view to taking Victor Lindelof’s starting role at some point over the next couple of years.
