Solskjaer sends personal scout to watch Declan Rice on Friday night: report

Manchester United Football Club have a serious midfield problem on their hands. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently without Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba due to long-term injury, while the likes of Andreas Pereira just aren’t good enough.

That has led to several stories suggesting a move for Bruno Fernandes could happen this month. However, the Daily Mail throw a different name into the mix; Declan Rice.

Apparently, Solskjaer sent his personal scout, Simon Wells, to watch the 20-year-old midfielder take on Sheffield United on Friday night.

Furthermore, Rice is amongst United’s ‘top targets’ and the player has rediscovered his best form despite a difficult start to the season. The Daily Mail also add that the Reds are looking to bolster their midfield.

Rice’s West Ham lost 1-0 against The Blades on Friday night – though it wasn’t without incident. Rice thought he’d grabbed an injury-time assist to rescue a point for The Hammers, but for VAR to rule it out…

The Englishman certainly fits the profile that Solskjaer has gone for; young and preferably British. The three signings in that mould have worked a treat thus far, so why should he change that mantra?

Rice definitely wouldn’t come cheap, though. The midfielder has four-and-a-half years left on his deal while West Ham will feel under absolutely no pressure to sell unless a monumental offer is placed on the table.

What I like about Rice is his versatility. Not only can he play as a holding midfielder, he can also slot in as a centre-half if needs be… Though this one is a deal that’ll have to wait until the summer.
