Squad News: Man United name 20-man squad for derby against City

Manchester United take on Manchester City in a huge Manchester derby tonight. For both sides, there’s something on the line.

The Red Devils are hunting a place in the Premier League’s top four, while City are still chasing down a second successive title. In games like this, form (thankfully) truly goes out of the window.

Over at the Manchester Evening News, in part of their build-up to the game, their eagle-eyed reporters have spotted a 20-strong United squad travelling to the Lowry Hotel as part of their pre-match routine.

On the whole, it does look like a strong squad. Thankfully, Luke Shaw is set to return following his suspension, while the usual suspects including Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Marcus Rashford are all included.

There is no place for Ander Herrera, however, as injury continues to get the better of the Basque-born midfielder. I’m also surprised to see no youth team players. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to give Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong, James Garner or Angel Gomes some valuable action off the substitutes bench…

Full 20-man Manchester United squad (via Manchester Evening News):

David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant, Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Diogo Dalot, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Fred, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial.

This is without doubt Solskjaer’s toughest assignment. The Red Devils will need to be at their absolute peak to secure any positive result from tonight, but if we lose here, then we can kiss goodbye to Champions League football for the next twelve months at least…

Come on boys!
