Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to hand Teden Mengi more first-team opportunities next season.
The story comes from The Independent, with the talented 18-year-old to be given more minutes, after making his debut in the Europa League against LASK just over a week ago.
Mengi, was praised by his manager in the aftermath of making his debut, with the mega-talented Mancunian now looking to kick on from here and cement himself within the first-team fold.
Now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seemingly identified the centre-half as someone who is now ready for more reps at the highest level of professional football. He’s still only a teenager.
With Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams making a huge impact at United this term, Mengi may well be the next in line.
It’s interesting because United are stacked in the centre-back position. It’s just that they struggle to keep themselves fit.
Phil Jones’ head must be on the chopping block, while Axel Tuanzebe is promising, though he’s had fitness issues this term.
The Independent also believe Eric Bailly has a big part to play next season. Apparently, the Ivorian is ‘best-placed’ to break up the Harry Maguire/Victor Lindelof partnership. Solskjaer believes Bailly is a ‘top-class talent’ – but again, he has to remain fit.
Mengi’s time is now?
Mengi is an interesting one, for me. He’s unbelievably gifted, though the lack of a pre-season means he’ll have to jump straight into it in competitive matches. Obviously, that’s less than ideal.
You would imagine he’ll be used in the cup games against opponents from lesser leagues. Unless there’s an injury crisis, I would expect Mengi to remain on the fringes of things for the next twelve months.
After all, he’s still young and learning his trade. Regular exposure to first-team training will do him the world of good, too. When he’s ready, Solskjaer will give him the minutes he deserves, make no mistake about that.
