Three Manchester United academy stars who could break through into the first team next season

Manchester United’s eye for talent has been well documented recently, especially with the amount of youngsters the club have been forced into playing due to injuries. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Tim Fosu-Mensah and Guillermo Varela have done well at times this season.

We’ve decided to compile a list of three players who could follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned trio, and make their step up next term.

James Weir – The Preston-born midfielder has been in the match day squad a few times now, so he’s clearly in Van Gaal’s thoughts. He has a brilliant eye for a pass, can run with the ball and is great at sticking it in the back of the net for a midfielder too.

Joe Rothwell – Rothwell is also a midfielder, but more of a box-to-box man rather than a creative influence. The Failsworth lad has been at United for years now, and although he was in the squad against Watford, he didn’t get on the pitch.

Manchester United have been calling out for a player in his mould for quite some time, and they could have had the right man for the job right under their noses.

Callum Gribbin – Without doubt the most exciting of the trio. Gribbin has pace to burn and can play either up front, or in any of the three spots in-behind the striker. He has deadly free-kicks, and an excellent footballing brain for a man so young. Hopefully we’ll see him in the cup competitions for the first-team next season.
