Tottenham Hotspur are targeting a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
That’s according to The Sun, per the Daily Mirror, who reckons that the North London club see Johnstone as the ideal backup for Hugo Lloris.
Johnstone, 25, could leave Old Trafford on a free transfer when his contract expires, with Spurs seemingly keen on signing the Englishman after an excellent loan spell at Aston Villa.
The goalkeeper has been at United for years, and watching him grow has always intrigued me. However, with world-class goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order, it was always likely that he’d have to move on elsewhere.
I think the fact that Spurs are showing an interest tells you everything you need to know about how talented he is. At this stage in his career, though, he simply has to be playing regular football.
Personally, I’d advise against a move to Tottenham as there is no way he’d get in front of Lloris in the pecking order. The smart decision would be to stay at Villa under Steve Bruce, where he’s established himself as a true #1.
Wherever he ends up, I certainly wish him luck.
