Manchester United are looking set to miss out on Xherdan Shaqiri’s signature this summer.
According to the Bristol Post, citing Sky Sports News, the Stoke City man is in discussions over a £13.5million move to Anfield.
It was just last week when Jose Mourinho entered the race to sign the right-winger, but it looks as though that short pursuit is now over.
Although Shaqiri was relegated last summer, that doesn’t take away from his ability as an individual. The 26-year-old was The Potters’ standout player last season, while also impressing for Switzerland during the World Cup until his country was knocked out.
At Old Trafford, right-wing has been a real issue over the last few seasons. He could have come in and made that position in the team his own. He definitely would have gotten more opportunities here than at Anfield, particularly with Mohamed Salah in the form he’s in.
I guess the major knock on Shaqiri has always been his inconsistency. For me, though, that’s always been the nature of the wide position. You have to expect they’ll be periods where wingers will drift in and out of games. At such a low cost, though, this one would have definitely been worth the gamble.
