Manchester United could be about to lose Anthony Martial this summer, with Jose Mourinho ready to use the Frenchman as a makeweight in a deal to sign Gareth Bale.
That’s what Spanish media outlet Don Balon are saying, with the self-proclaimed Special One to offer £53million (€60m) plus the 22-year-old Frenchman to Zinedine Zidane for the Welsh winger.
However, the report goes on to add that Zizou will reject the offer, despite being a fan of Martial’s. He wants a straight-up cash deal worth £88million to let the 28-year-old leave the Santiago Bernabeu.
Bale’s time in Spain has been a mixed bag. There has been trophies aplenty for the former Tottenham Hotspur man, but his injury record has hampered him rather significantly.
When he left Spurs, I always thought he’d have been perfect for Manchester United, but we’ve moved on since then.
Signing an injury-prone 28-year-old, while letting a world-class talent leave would be immensely bad for business at Old Trafford.
With that said, I wouldn’t put it past Mourinho to do exactly that. He loves the experienced, ready-made player, and although it would be a gamble to sign Bale, it’s a move that he’s made time-and-time again throughout his trophy-laden career.
