Manchester United today confirmed that Antonio Valencia has requested to give up the coveted number 7 shirt, and has been handed back his old number 25.
Valencia was given the number 7 shirt following Michael Owens departure last summer. But after a disappointing season by Valencia’s standards, he has opted to give it up.
Maybe Antonio felt the pressure of wearing the shirt made famous by names such as Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo.
I certainly hope it is the boost he needs to get back into the form that made him so devastating down the right in the 2011/12 season.
We await the announcement on Friday for the official squad numbers for the upcoming season to see if the number 7 will be worn next season.
