Van Persie explains why Rashford needs to be ‘really careful’ with back injury

Manchester United Football Club are definitely in the hunt for a place in the Premier League’s top-four, make no mistake about that.

Key January additions of Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo will definitely help, though we all know the latter was forced due to an injury to Marcus Rashford.

The severity of the problem Rashford has suffered is more serious than everyone thought, with it being ‘touch and go’ whether the young Englishman will play again this season.

Now, the 22-year-old United star has been sent a warning in regards to said injury, by none other than Reds legend Robin van Persie. The Dutchman speaks from experience, as he’s had the same problem in the past. Rashford has been told to be ‘really careful’ by the Premier League winner.

“I had it [same injury as Rashford] when I was 19.” Van Persie said live on BT Sport, transcribed by the Manchester Evening News.

“I was out for three and a half months. He needs to be really careful with this injury because it’s an overload injury.”

Three-and-a-half-months out is no joke. If Rashford follows that same pattern, I’d doubt he’ll play again this season. After all, he’s the poster-boy for this new-look United side that is being put together with long-term goals in mind.

The worst thing United could do is rush him back, then have England take him to the European Championships over the summer and only make matters worse.

“He should take a proper rest, like literally sit down on his sofa, rest for the next couple of weeks and let it heal.” Van Persie added.

“You have to look at it in two stages. The first bit, six to eight weeks, is doing nothing and then the next eight weeks is to get back to fitness again.”

“You really have to see it in two stages and for him, he has to think about his future because he is the future of Manchester United.”

Give him the rest of this season, allow him to train over the summer and come back with a point to prove at the start of next term.

Yes, it’ll be tough to get by without him, though he’s 22. We need to keep the faith, trust the process and in the end, United will benefit. This is a young man who has the footballing world at his feet, though Solskjaer will be looking to kick on next term, he’ll need his star boy.
