Wayne Rooney in talks over a new Manchester United contract?

With many respected journalists suggesting that more good news could be on the horizon for Manchester United. Talk is building surrounding Wayne Rooney and a new Manchester United contract. The 28-year old has reportedly refused to pen a new deal in recent weeks, but the Juan Mata signing could have changed his mind.

According to the Daily Mail, Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford, has held talks with Ed Woodward about signing a new Old Trafford contract over the past couple of days. With just eighteen months left to run on his current deal, Rooney would be available to speak to other clubs about a potential free transfer in a years time. Tying Rooney down to a new contract would show that we definitely mean business in the long-term, and it’d mean that we’d have a mouthwatering front three of Mata, Rooney and Van Persie for at least a few years yet.

I’d love Wayne Rooney to sign a contract extension, however I don’t think he deserves an upgrade on his £250k a week wages just yet. After all his antics, he needs to prove he still wants to be at United, and he needs to apologise to the fans.

Im not claiming Rooney is the most loyal red and some of his past antics have cheesed me off at times to say the least but id be more than happy to see him sign a contract extension and have a crack at breaking the all time goal scoring record with him hopefully finishing his career with us. Credit where credits due he has ran his socks for the club this season and been dragging us along with his lung bursting performances. Without him, dare i say it, im not sure if we would even be in the top half of the table this year. Im personally over the moon that he wants to stay. Although im against him seemingly trying to hold the club to ransom at times I for one would give him a pay rise. Lets not forget what Rooney has done for us in the past on the pitch and what we have achieved together. This could be his last big contract and id like to see him nailed down to United for the rest of his career and go down as a modern day legend in Old Trafford folk law.
