Wayne Rooney proves he still has something to offer Manchester United as a captain

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has certainly come in for some extremely heavy criticism at the start of the 2016/17 season, and you have to say that most of it has been deserved. That led to our club captain getting dropped, but he got his chance against Fenerbahce yesterday.

Although he didn’t get himself a goal, his all-round game seemed to have improved greatly which is a massive positive for everyone involved. The 30-year-old held the all up well, dragged teammates into play and got United moving in the right direction where possible.

Perhaps the best thing he did was show everyone what a real leader he is. Manchester United won two penalties on the night, but Rooney did not take either of them – opting to give both Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial a bit of a confidence booster by allowing them to take some pressure off of their shoulders.

Let’s not forget, this is a man who is so close to breaking the goal scoring record, but he obviously sees putting the team first as the main thing to do – and you have to applaud that.

Did he do enough to earn a start against Chelsea this weekend? Probably not, but it’s brilliant to see our captain heading back in the right direction.
