Manchester United have seemingly found a new long-term home for Wayne Rooney, in a role that you may not have expected; Central midfield. After the FA Cup semi-final win, the United captain was speaking to the media, and he explained why he enjoys his new-found position.
“I think you’re obviously more involved in the game playing in midfield, you have a bigger influence from that position.” Rooney told ManUtd.com after United’s victory.
“I’ve tried to play what I’ve seen and I think it worked, with me and Carrick having a bit more experience in there.”
I think that yesterday we’ve seen a real indicator as to where Wayne Rooney will play the majority of his football for both club and country. He really excelled there in a hugely important game, and he clearly has the passing range, intelligence and ability to become a regular in the centre of the pitch.
At 30, you’d imagine his days as starting as a striker are looking numbered, and when you couple that with the form of Marcus Rashford, it certainly backs that up. If we can get another few years out of him in that area of the field then it would be a real boost to both him and Manchester United Football Club.
