For me, this is one of the best pieces of business the club has done all summer. There has been a lot of talk about United not willing to match Welbeck’s contractual demands, however the great news is that the Manchester born 21-year old has penned a new deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2016.
Welbeck got better and better as last season went on, then he carried his rich vein of form into the European Championships with England. However with the arrival of Robin van Persie he may find his options limited this year, I still expect him to make a big impact on the first team though.
Sir Alex revealed to ManUtd.com that he was ‘delighted’ with Danny’s progress over the past few years “Danny has been with the club since he was eight years old and has made fantastic progress in the last couple of years – first out on loan and last year as a regular in the first team. He has become an important player at international level as well, as the maturity of his performances at the European Championships showed. This year is another important one for him. He has a bright future ahead of him.”
This is what our club does, takes talented youngsters and turns them into something special, lets just hope Danny Welbeck is the next big thing to make a big impact in the first team. Upon signing his new deal, the youngster said “Playing for United is all I’ve ever wanted to do – it’s the club I’ve supported all my life. I can’t wait for the challenge of the new season to play my part in helping the team compete for trophies. I’m learning all the time from the best manager in the game and I’m keen for that to continue alongside the world class players in the squad.”
