Today it was announced by the FA that Gary Cahill would miss the European Championships as he broke his jaw in the international friendly vs. Belgium yesterday evening. So who did England call up? Micah Richards? No. Rio Ferdinand? No. Try uncapped 22 year old Martin Kelly who has started just 10 games for a mid table Premier League side.
Rio is now 33, and surely after he found that that England would need a replacement for Cahill, he must’ve had a chance at getting back into the England side. Shortly after, Rio took to twitter and sent this tweet to his 2.8million followers:
This is in relation to when Roy Hodgson stated that he picked John Terry over Rio Ferdinand for footballing reasons only, and now Roy has seemingly chosen Martin Kelly for the same reason. For me, this issue goes beyond footballing reasons as there is no comparison between the two, Rio is still one of the best English centre-backs in world football.
Late this evening a representative of our centre-back have blasted the FA for decided not to include him in the 23-man squad.
“Lampard, Terry, Barry, Gerrard; all ageing but they go to the tournament. Why is Rio different?” He continued. “To treat a player that has captained and served his country 81 times (in this manner) is nothing short of disgraceful. Total lack of respect from Hodgson and the FA as far as I am concerned.”
This means that Rio Ferdinand will never get the chance to play at a European Championship having now missed out on four tournaments for different reasons, and to be honest, it’s difficult to see Rio adding to the 81 caps he already has. However, bad news for England is good news for United as it means we will be getting a nice and refreshed Rio Ferdinand for the 2012/13 season.
