Before the Community Shield yesterday, Antonio Valencia gave up the #7 jersey voluntarily due to a disappointing season. The pressure of the coveted #7 seemingly got to the Ecuador international, so its probably in everyones best interests that he switched back to his old #25 shirt.
From Best to Ronaldo and Beckham to Cantona, that shirt number has been worn by some of United’s greatest ever players, we want to look at who’ll wear the iconic shirt next.
The 20-year old winger is a new arrival at Old Trafford, but in little time he has been here, he has thoroughly impressed the Old Trafford faithful. He has certain similarities to former #7 shirt wearer Cristiano Ronaldo, but would giving the shirt to him now be too much pressure for the young man? Does he deserve it? Probably not quite yet, but possibly in the future.
Nani splits opinion amongst United fans. The majority think he is far too inconsistent to be a part of the squad, never mind the starting line-up. On his day though, he is unstoppable and one of the worlds best. Unfortunately he is currently injured, but in the 30 minutes of pre-season he has played he thoroughly impressed.
Upon his move to United last summer, Shinji Kagawa was adamant that he wanted to earn the #7 shirt so he took the #26. Did he do enough last season to warrant the jersey though? I’ll say not quite. He showed glimpses of his brilliance but didn’t do it consistently enough. Give him another year in the Premier League and we’ll see.
A new signing?
This would be my preferred option, but only to the right player of course. If a big name like a Bale or Ronaldo were to come in, they’d surely have to be given the #7. The shirt deserves a world class player wearing it, I wouldn’t give it to someone like Fellaini if we were to sign him.
Right now this is a big possibility. It’d be odd not having a #7 in the squad but I wouldn’t be totally against the idea. I’d prefer Moyes to leave it free for a season or two rather than handing it to a player just for the sake of it.
The squad numbers are finalised this week so we’ll know soon enough…
