Why Aaron Wan-Bissaka should be Manchester United’s Player of the Year

For Manchester United, 2019/20 has brought far more ups than downs. After a slow start, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept the faith and turned our fortunes around.

What has been most impressive this term is our high-pressure wins. Time-and-time again, United have stepped up against the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, giving the fans some wonderful days out.

Our work is not done as United look to force their way into the Premier League top-four, while also progressing in the cup competitions. The coronavirus has brought everything to a halt, though, which got us thinking about who our top performers have been…

At around Christmas time, I had Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay leading the charge. Both have suffered long-term injuries, though, which all-but rules them out.

Fred has been superb, as have Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford. Bruno Fernandes is simply inspiring, though I’m not sure less than half-a-season is enough body of work to give him the honour.

In the end, we’ve settled on Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United’s £50million man should be named Player of the Year in our humble opinion. Here’s why.

Defending ability

Wan-Bissaka, according to his manager, is amongst the best 1v1 defender he’s ever seen. Ask Raheem Sterling, who United’s right-back has pocketed on three occasions this season.

I’ve never seen a purer tackler, particularly when sliding, in my life. In this day and age where all the focus is on the attacking intent, Wan-Bissaka is throwing it back old school – at an unbelievably high level.

For one so young (22), Wan-Bissaka plays with a maturity and a calmness beyond his years. Interceptions, heading, positional sense and a willing battler, this lad has everything you need to be considered an elite defender.

Consistency is key for Aaron Wan-Bissaka POTY hopes

Most players, throughout the course of a season, will have a poor spell. Wan-Bissaka has stayed at a 7/10 (or higher) level for practically the whole season.

In whatever game, under whatever pressure, Wan-Bissaka is ready to stand up and be counted. United need more players like him if they’re to get back to the promised land.

I don’t just mean consistency in terms of on-field play, either. Wan-Bissaka has rarely been injured and when he has been suffering from knocks, the Englishman is willing to put his body on the line. That toughness, grit and determination is definitely a contributing factor.

Again, this is why Rashford and McTominay’s chances at winning the award have decreased. That criticism can’t be levelled at Wan-Bissaka.

Ever-improving

We know that Wan-Bissaka is working on his crossing in training, though all across the board, the Spider is getting better as this season progresses. Playing for United is no easy task, it comes with extreme pressure. Wan-Bissaka has taken to it like a duck to water. He deserves credit for that.

Simply put, he’s been United’s best

Ole’s signings have all worked wonders so far – that’s where his predecessor badly got it wrong. Wan-Bissaka has been by far and away the best, though.

He’s young, still getting better with a hugely bright future at both club and international level. The Reds have an absolute gem on their hands and when this season (eventually) ends, Aaron Wan-Bissaka deserves that credit.
