Anthony Martial’s goal against Newcastle took the roof off Old Trafford. Manchester United had made it 2-2, there was still time for Alexis Sanchez to come on and grab the winner.

As pandemonium took place in the stands, no doubt Edward Woodward was counting the cash. According to a report from the Daily Mirror, the aforementioned goal from Martial cost the club a hefty £7.2million.

Apparently, a clause within Martial’s contract meant that, if he scored 25 Premier League goals before 2019, the Red Devils would have to pay AS Monaco £7.2million as an add-on clause.

Was it worth it? Of course it was. That moment at Old Trafford was brilliant. It has been a huge highlight in a season full of lows to this point.

I’m also pleased for Martial himself. He has found it tough going since Sanchez made the move to the Theatre of Dreams, but to his credit, he has kept working hard and giving his absolute all for the cause. That’s all us United fans expect. As long as we see the effort is there, that’s more than good enough.

Martial now deserves a chance to start week-in-week-out for at least the next few games. He was the difference-maker last time out. Now it’s down to Jose Mourinho to reward him for that.
