Ask any Manchester United fan who they want brought into the Squad this Summer and nine times of of ten they will reply with the name of a Centre Midfielder, maybe even two. The reasoning for this is simple, Paul Scholes is retiring at the end of the Season, Darren Fletcher’s illness, and also, the speculation about Anderson being sold in the upcoming Transfer Window.
This leaves United with just three Centre Midfielders capable of playing regular first team Football next season, the ever brilliant Michael Carrick, the classy Tom Cleverley and England U19 International, Nick Powell.
United fans will also tell you that we have relied on Carrick for too long and that Anderson’s on off involvement in the First Team is preventing young Nick Powell’s progression.
This Season looks like the Season Sir Alex Ferguson will finally sign an established Centre Midfielder. Who that Midfielder should be splits opinions into 3-4 contenders. The popular choices being Victor Wanyama of Celtic, Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle and Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton. The final popular answer being the man I believe has to be wearing the red of United next Season, 23 year old Dutch International, Kevin Strootman of PSV.
At just 23 years old, Strootman has made 18 appearances for his Country, and 56 for PSV Eindhoven, who currently sit second in the Dutch Eredivise. This shows relative experience, and being picked regularly for a National Team as strong as Holland of late shows that there’s talent in the boy.
He also seems impressive linking up with United top scorer Robin van Persie when playing for Holland, this relationship could improve at Club Level.
Strootman is a ball winning Midfielder, full of creativity and energy, who can get forward and pick a pass. He’s pretty similar to United Midfielder Michael Carrick, a younger version, a Carrick 2.0 if you like.
The Transfer would be a very smart one, bringing in a Player of relative experience but only at the age of 23 shows stability and is a long term investment. Strootman has been linked with United for a while now, there has also been links of a move to Arsenal, this could be affecting him slightly as this Season he has not been as sharp, but he seems to be looking at a move and has spoke of United vaguely in the past.
Who exactly United should sign in the Midfield will split opinions, there’s no doubt about that. Some people may agree, others may completely disagree on the basis that he is too similar to Carrick, the debate goes on. A deal for Kevin Strootman would look to be around the £15-£20 Million Pound mark, a reasonable price for a promising and fairly young Centre Midfielder of that experience.
All this in hand, is why I believe Kevin Strootman is the ideal candidate for United Midfield, we all like a Dutchman, right?
