Yaya Toure labels Manchester United man as one of toughest ever opponents

Manchester United and Manchester City’s rivalry has certainly intensified recently, mainly due to an influx of money being enjoyed by the Blue half of the town…

To be fair to them, they deservedly won the Premier League this term, but we’ll be saying goodbye to a man who has to be considered amongst the best midfielders of his generation; Yaya Toure.

The Ivory Coast international will be leaving City at the season’s end. Perhaps he’ll remain in England, who knows…

Anyway, he was asked about who the toughest players he’s faced while at City, and to my surprise, he named Nemanja Matic as one of his toughest opponents; citing his height and physicality as his main strengths, while also letting out an expletive…

“I hate him, this b******!” Toure is quoted as saying by Goal.

“He’s such a difficult player to play against. Tall and strong as well. It’s been fun to play against him, even though it’s difficult. He’s powerful, he’s tall.”

“To be able to find an opponent to play against me and stop me… there’s few of them, but Matic was one of the close ones who was able to give me problems. He can run. He can fall back. He can track. He can fight. He’s a good, good player.”

This is massive praise indeed for Matic. We’ve seen just how brilliant he is as a midfield enforcer, and I still cannot believe that Chelsea sold him to us.

We’re talking about a Premier League proven powerhouse who loves to sit in front of the back four and break the play up. Not only has he shored up the defence, but he’s also freed up Paul Pogba who has definitely improved upon his displays from the first season.

I guess the only concern regarding Matic is that he’s in the latter stages of his career and we likely won’t be enjoying his talents for much more than a few campaigns. For now, though, we just have to be happy that we have him…
