Manchester United kick-off their EFL Cup campaign with an away trip to Northampton Town this evening. The hosts will be wanting to spring a surprise against one of the biggest clubs in the world, but Jose will be after his side to bounce back and put the last three results out of their system.
Date: 21st September.
Kick-off Time: 19:45
Referee: Stuart Atwell
Venue: Sixfields
The game won’t be easy. These types of clashes never are because the so-called ‘smaller sides’ often give everything they have, whereas teams with the stature of United tend to rest all their key players.
Team News
Mourinho has a few injury concerns on his hands. It looks as though Henrikh Mkhitaryan hasn’t been passed fit, neither has Luke Shaw or Anthony Martial. We could well see Timothy Fosu-Mensah start which will be great, as we haven’t seen him play a single minute of competitive football at the start of this season.
Last Meeting: Northampton 0-2 Manchester United.
United got the better of the Football League side the last time the sides met, but it wasn’t easy. Diego Forlan missed an early penalty before Mikael Silvestre opened the scoring. The game was wrapped up with a Northampton own goal in the second half.
Match Prediction: Northampton Town 0-2 Manchester United.
Hopefully, Marcus Rashford can get himself on the scoresheet again here. At the weekend he was the only bright spark, so I reckon changes galore will be made. I’ll go for Memphis Depay to grab the other goal.
