Simply put, Manchester United were humbled by FC Barcelona last night. The Catalan giants didn’t even get out of second gear and they practically played us off the park.
For the Red Devils, it was made glaringly obvious that this squad isn’t anywhere near good enough to compete for multiple major honours. That has to be a concern.
The worst performer on the night was Ashley Young. At the time, it felt like everything the 33-year-old tried was failing. He couldn’t keep up with the pace of the high-intensity match, and now, we have the stats to back that up…
The guys over at Football Fan Cast claim that Young lost the ball on 32 occasions during the fixture, which is roughly one cough-up of possession once every three minutes.
To add to that, he also attempted 11 crosses, none of which were met by a red shirt. That’s just not good enough at the elite level, and if the fans know it, then surely the club must be aware of that, too?
That’s when it dawned on me. The biggest club in the country have a failed, ageing winger as their make-shift first-choice full-back. That’s not good enough. The board must do something about that this summer as this squad is miles off the pace.
