I think it’s fair to say that Manchester United’s pre-season tour has gotten off to a rather slow start…
In fact, the word I’d use to describe proceedings pre AC Milan would’ve been turgid. Honestly, it all stems from the manager. When he’s walking round with a miserable look across his face, that rubs off on the rest of the squad. Anyway, things did get better last time out and I’m praying that trend continues against Liverpool in this one.
Things are starting to take shape, slowly but surely, so we’re beginning to get more of a look in regards to whom our manager trusts. With that in mind, let’s take a look at our predicted Manchester United XI vs Liverpool…
Predicted Manchester United XI vs Liverpool:
Joel Pereira and Lee Grant have been sharing duties in between the sticks until this point. That’s a trend that looks set to continue, with the former getting the nod in this instance. Mourinho’s options at full-back are extremely limited and they pretty much pick themselves with Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian looking likely to play. I’d love to see Demetri Mitchell get his opportunity, but at this stage, it doesn’t look likely. Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling will sit at the heart of the back four.
Nemanja Matic will start his first tour game following his World Cup exploits with Serbia. He’ll have Ander Herrera in front of him, along with new Red Devils man Fred. There is intrigue aplenty surrounding the Brazilian, so I’ll certainly be watching with a keen eye to see how he gets on against our fiercest rivals.
Then we have the front three where options are severely limited, even moreso after Anthony Martial flew home for the birth of his son. Alexis Sanchez led the line brilliantly against AC Milan, he’ll continue up top. Juan Mata will also start, with Tahith Chong completing the line-up. The fluffy-haired Dutchman has a great opportunity to prove his worth against the very best.
