Manchester United head into what is probably their biggest transfer window in years. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel, fans’ patience will probably remain, but the Baby Faced Assassin needs to be backed.
I still firmly believe that Jose Mourinho would likely still be in charge if he’d have been given real money to spend twelve months ago, but hey-ho, that’s in the past and it’s up to United to right their wrongs.
A lack of Champions League football on offer means United will probably have to delve deeper into their list of targets as the top boys want to play in European football’s premier competition. With that in mind, we’ve drawn up five players from Premier League clubs who’d improve this playing squad
Toby Alderweireld – Tottenham Hotspur – centre-half
Centre-half remains a real need. Victor Lindelof has been pretty good this season but he needs help. With the right partner, the Ice Man has potential to be a top player for this club going forward. Toby Alderweireld, for around £25million no-less, could be that man.
The Belgium international has been simply superb this term but he could well be on the move this summer. Aged 30, he’d bring the required experience and leadership that this team is crying out for.
Idrissa Gueye – Everton – Defensive-midfield
United need that mobile defensive-midfielder who can get around the pitch and do the dirty work. Nemanja Matic is way past his best while it’d be unfair to lump too much pressure on Scott McTominay. Idrissa Gana Gueye would be the perfect fit.
Again, he’s older in age so that comes with a wiseness. The Senegalese loves to put in a tackle and get physical, while also having the awareness to move the ball forward to the more, shall we say, gifted players within the squad. He’d be our Fernandinho.
Youri Tielemans – Leicester City (on loan from AS Monaco) – midfield
What a player this young lad is. He’s been absolutely dynamite since moving to the Premier League. He’s flourishing in Brendan Rodgers’ system and the scary thing is, Youri Tielemans is still just 21.
Alright, so technically he’s an AS Monaco player, and Leicester will be doing all they can to make the transfer a permanent one, but United should push them all the way. In terms of an Ander Herrera replacement, the Belgium international would be perfect. He’d come to Old Trafford hungry and with the right attitude – that’s exactly what we need at the moment.
Callum Hudson-Odoi – Chelsea – right-winger
So Callum Hudson-Odoi is currently injured and who knows how long he’ll be sidelined for, but after becoming disillusioned at Chelsea due to a lack of playing time, the young Englishman could well be on the move.
As for United, they’ve been crying out for a right-winger for about a half-decade. Hudson-Odoi would bring a real youthful exuberance to an area of the field where United need a massive upgrade – although he probably wouldn’t be cheap…
Ricardo Pereira – Leicester City – right-back
He’s probably Leicester’s most underrated player. With Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian likely leaving, while Ashley Young just isn’t good enough, Solskjaer needs to invest in a new right-back. Ricardo Pereira would be perfect.
The Portuguese has a real engine which means he can bomb up and down the field all game. He’s also got a decent cross on him, and defensively Pereira is more than solid. This would be a brilliant addition, in fact, probably my favourite player on this list.
