Man United continued their pre-season form in the best way possible, putting Crystal Palace to the sword. But what did we learn from this one?
The 100% winning record under Erik ten Hag continued, with this one arguably the best of the lot. The free-flowing moves, hard work, tenacity and setup. United’s new Dutch manager must have been delighted with what he saw.
Anyway, let’s get right into it…
Tyrell Malacia can play
Handed his first start, Malacia certainly wowed the crowd with his skill, quick feet and willingness to work. The Dutchman looked lively from minute one, bombing forward wherever possible and playing some lovely passes into the area.
The former Feyenoord man didn’t have it easy, with Crystal Palace’s players certainly crunching into him on more than one occasion. He absolutely held his own, though.
United want to play on the front foot
It’s so refreshing to watch this United side play with genuine purpose and intent. I guess you kind of take it for granted but gone are the days of us sitting back and hoping to counter-attack.
The way the team are already working together as a complete unit, putting in the graft for one another and playing with real tenacity is positive. Hopefully, this attack-minded style continues when the serious stuff starts next month.
Anthony Martial looks rejuvenated
I genuinely thought Martial’s time at United was pretty much done when he moved away on loan. Well, I’m happy to be proven completely wrong, given how sharp the Frenchman has looked on tour.
Not only has he scored in every game thus far, but he’s also been heavily involved in the build-up play and it’s truly superb to see. Pace, precision in the passing, correct decision-making and most importantly, effort.
The United players look supremely fit
Again, it’s early days but the signs are positive. I had my doubts about this squad’s willingness to work and put the graft in, but to their credit, they all look hungry and extremely fit.
Watching these guys press with genuine intensity has been a real pleasure to watch. Sure, there’s still plenty to learn and improve on, but we have to be delighted with the start.
These players look completely transformed
The manager deserves all the credit for that. It looks like a completely different team, filled with hungry individuals who are looking to succeed at the highest level.
Nobody encompasses that fact more than Martial, who led the line brilliantly and caused all sorts of problems all game long. Hopefully, the lads continue in this manner and keep progressing during pre-season and beyond.
The verdict
It was another positive performance, but it’s worth noting Crystal Palace were pretty dreadful. No doubt the Reds will face tougher opposition than this before the serious stuff starts, but the confidence is flowing!
