Ander Herrera has been somewhat of Louis van Gaal’s forgotten man at times this season, with the fans calling for the popular Spaniard to be started more. However that hasn’t been the case, but today the Iron Tulip’s hand was forced into playing Herrera.
In the warm-up, Anthony Martial pulled up with a tight hamstring, and with a lack of forward options on the bench, Herrera got a rare start.
Despite not putting in his typical type of performance Herrera did relatively well on the whole, and helps Carrick win the midfield battle.
We all know that the former Bilbao man never shirks a tackle, and that was evident today as he won a United-high six on the day. To further sing his praises, Herrera played three key passes to his Manchester United teammates, who struggled to convert those chances.
He finished the match with 73 passes on the day, and also added four shots as Manchester United flooded forward desperately trying to score. In the end it was Herrera’s Spanish compatriot Juan Mata that will take the plaudits, but take nothing away from Ander, who put in a solid display.
