On the back of two 1-0 defeats to Norwich and Galatasaray in the league and Champions League respectively, United take on QPR at Old Trafford tomorrow in what can be classed as a must win game. We caught up with QPR fan Mike, who runs the blog QPR Report.
We asked him some questions and got his thoughts on a variety of topics, including Mark Hughes, QPR’s transfer business and his thoughts on our young wing-back Fabio Da Silva.
(These questions were asked before Mark Hughes’ sacking!)
Jordan@ Old Trafford Faithful: Mark Hughes was a popular player at Manchester United, however his managerial career seems to be going downhill, what do you make of his abilities?
Mike (QPR Report): I never wanted us to axe Warnock – but I freely confess once there was a vacancy, Hughes was the man I wanted. Pre-season I predicted a 10th place finish…Now want him gone. Sadly Manchester United have ruined for us football fans – since we keep getting “thrown in our face” – the Ferguson example of how Man Utd came close to axing him…. they didn’t and that shows why should managers more time.
Jordan: QPR spent big in the summer, including bringing in Park Ji-Sung on a permanent deal and Fabio in on loan, have you been pleased with their performances?
Mike: In a word, no. Both have been big disappointments, I wonder to what degree we were conned – or whether we bought them for marketing reasons – especially making Park Ji-Sung captain.
Jordan: With the amount of talent you have in your squad, how frustrating is it to see your side rock bottom of the Premier League table?
Mike: It’s absolutely pathetic and totally not what we expected. Obviously, we never expected a title race for us – those days are over. But respectability and some good results? Absolutely.
Jordan: What would have to happen this season for you to consider it a successful one?
Mike: Just staying up – which sounds pathetic with the quality we have, but true.
Jordan: Who do you see as your most influential player this season?
Mike: Don’t have one! Influential would mean guiding the team to victory…And of course we haven’t done that. Our better players are Julio Cesar, Esteban Granero, Adel Taarabt and Ryan Nelsen – but thus far they haven’t performed.
Jordan: If you could take one United player to QPR, who would you choose and why?
Mike: Van Persie, we need a goalscorer. I don’t particularly like Rooney – but obviously great player. I think the last great former Manchester United
player at QPR who actually worked out for us – was Don Givens in the early and mid-1970s. Since then, had quite a few “Hand me downs” but they havent worked out.
Jordan: Who do you think will win the league this season?
Mike: Manchester United
Jordan: Good answer, ha! Finally, a score prediction for Saturday’s game?
Mike: I think we’ll raise our game because we’re playing Manchester United – and the players will want to market themselves (which says something about them) But still lose 3-1 (and could be a lot more)
