Manchester United’s season has been somewhat topsy-turvy. When the pressure is on, this squad has proven they can rise to the challenge and pick up positive results.
However, against the sides the Reds are supposed to beat, Ole Gunnar Soskjaer’s squad tend to struggle.
What is clear (to me anyway) that this United team is heading in the right direction. Solskjaer made some hugely positive signings over the summer, the best of which, for me, is Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The tough-tackling right-back has single-handedly locked down that flank due to his brilliance in the one-on-one situation. Anyway this weekend, the superstar 22-year-old did an interview and admitted what we all thought – nobody, not even his teammates who play against him every single day, can get past Wan-Bissaka in training.
“Is that really true? ‘I would say so yeah, from what I can remember,’ Wan-Bissaka said in an excellent exclusive with the Daily Mail.
‘I can see the frustration but with them I can also see that they are not giving up. They still want to keep trying until they do (get past) and that’s the thing that gets me going, team-mates testing me. It helps me.’
Wan-Bissaka also had this to say about his opponents who’ve been going up against him:
‘There have been times, I can tell, when players are frustrated going down that [left] side and they just stop,’ Wan-Bissaka said.
‘That makes me aware of my ability. I’ve had players joke around and say ‘any chance?’ they can get down [my side].’
In the modern-day game, having a full-back who’s main strength is defending is somewhat of a rarity. You look at Trent Alexander-Arnold who is superb going forward but somewhat suspect going the other way. Wan-Bissaka is a real throwback to the old-school.
I just love him. Wan-Bissaka is already amongst my favourite players at the club. He’s at the perfect place to develop and grow and the Englishman is actually pretty decent at going forward. It doesn’t help that this United side has very little height as the former Crystal Palace man can put a good ball into the box.
Anyway, let’s hope Wan-Bissaka’s top form continues into the game against Burnley this evening. Come on you Reds!
