Manchester United’s move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be finalised today – and what a great signing this will be.
The immediate thought is that the 21-year-old has been brought in to replace the outgoing Antonio Valencia, while fans remain overjoyed at the prospect of no more Ashley Young on the right-hand side of the defence.
However, it’s easy to forget that just twelve months ago, almost £20million was spent to bring Diogo Dalot to the club. Well, the Evening Standard have provided an update on the future of the young Portuguese.
Despite the similarities between Wan-Bissaka and Dalot, it’s the latter who is the odd-man-out, particularly when you factor in Luke Shaw’s form in the 2018/19 campaign.
Anyway, the Evening Standard actually outline Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future plans for Dalot, by claiming that the Baby Faced Assassin is ‘prepared’ to switch the 20-year-old’s position, by using him as either a left-back or in ‘wide areas’.
This would make sense. Dalot actually played pretty well on the right-hand side at times towards the end of the campaign, which was largely due to his excellent ability to deliver a ball into the box. With no real right-winger in the squad at the moment, that could be the potential opening for the Portuguese.
We’ve seen something similar before with Gareth Bale, who started his career as a left-back before being converted into a winger. Now I’m not saying Dalot is going to follow in Bale’s career trajectory, but it is a viable option to start him out wide if Solskjaer feels that’s the way to go…
