Alan Shearer launches scathing attack on Antony Martial

Anthony Martial has turned into a real problem for Manchester United this season, particularly in the Premier League.

After enjoying his best ever season in terms of numbers in 2020/21, Martial’s goal output has seriously dwindled this term. In fact, our number nine has struck just four times in the Premier League, two of which came in that 9-0 blowout against Southampton.

Whether it’s a confidence thing or just a bad run of form, who knows? However, one thing is for certain, scoring that number of goals, in a team that leads the division in that stat, just isn’t enough.

Perhaps Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already knew that this was likely, as why else would he sanction a move for Edinson Cavani? The Uruguayan could certainly teach Martial a thing or two, that’s for sure…

Anyway, now Match of the Day pundit and the top-scorer in Premier League history, Alan Shearer, has had his say. He’s launched a scathing attack on the Frenchman, who he claims simply isn’t doing enough at this point in time…

Check out what Alan Shearer had to say here:

“Apparently he’s the one who says he wants play centre forward, he deserves to be in there…” Shearer said live on MOTD, transcribed by The Sun.

“Well, his numbers I think have to be a lot better if he wants to play in that position.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of experience. This is his sixth season at Manchester United.

“I would say it’s his lack of hunger and lack of desire to get in there to constantly score goals you need to.

“He had a good season in terms of numbers last season but you have to do that on a regular basis, particularly when Man Utd are scoring as many as they are.”

This is just a snippet of what Shearer said live on air last night – but it’s incredibly hard to disagree with what the Newcastle United legend had to say…

The output from Martial just isn’t enough. We need someone who is going to consistently offer us 20+ goals a season and the Frenchman isn’t going to get anywhere close to that figure.

What’s most frustrating is the fact that Martial just looks disinterested. If he was working his socks off for the cause, us fans would be far more lenient. Instead, he’s ambling around the field looking like he’s not really that bothered about what’s going on…

We all love Martial, we all want him to succeed here, but he’s just not a natural number nine. He also has an issue with the competition out on the left-wing, too, with Marcus Rashford putting in some monstrous performances from out there. At this juncture, you’d say it’s going to be pretty tough for Martial to keep his place at the club…
