Alejandro Garnacho has had himself a whirlwind six months.
After Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the headlines and ruined Alejandro Garnacho’s moment, we thought it fair to ignore the former and discuss the latter in depth.
From earning an Argentina call-up, to winning the FA Youth Cup, while forcing his way into Erik ten Hag’s first-team plans. Garnacho is looking like the real deal.
For anyone who watched Garnacho at youth level, you’ll know of his insane natural talent. Skill alone doesn’t get you to the pinnacle, though. His attitude came into question during pre-season. The teenager would spend some months away from the first-team fold as a result. Credit has to go to the manager for recognising that the player needed to be grounded.
This would make Garnacho hungrier. Relighting that fire in his belly. It worked a treat. We’re witnessing the makings of a truly elite footballer developing right before our very eyes.
Garnacho’s talent
I’m just in awe of his natural ability. Every single time he’s played for the senior team, Garnacho often looks like the best player on the pitch. He’s eighteen years old. That’s borderline ridiculous when you consider he’s playing for one of the biggest clubs on the planet.
What’s scary is that he’s not even filled out yet. When he adds that bit of extra muscle and grows completely into his body, we could be looking at the complete player. It’s a scary thought for opposing teams.
Finding the right balance between confidence and arrogance
Every top player has to believe in their ability, though there’s a fine line between belief and genuine arrogance. Garnacho has that swagger. There’s no doubt about it. He’s young. Sometimes he will step over that line. That’s normal.
Right now though, Ten Hag has his starlet grounded. I’m glad there was no Argentina call-up given to the young man. It’s simply too early. It takes Garnacho away from his comfort zone in Manchester. It’d be another way in which the player would allow the limelight to affect him in a negative way.
The goal yesterday, coupled with the celebration was perfect. Garnacho knows he’s potentially the next big thing, though he was keen to celebrate with his teammates and the fans, without stepping over the mark. Class.
The goal itself tells you everything you need to know
The desire he showed to get on the end of that Luke Shaw ball was nothing short of sensational. It was a Kylian Mbappe-esque turn of pace, while also showing strength to hold off the defender, before coolly slotting home past the keeper.
To do that, in added time, to score your first Premier League goal and win the game for his team, is nothing short of spectacular. it really is the stuff dreams are made of.
You can see just how loved Garnacho is within that dressing room, too. All the players wanted to go over to him and show their appreciation. A magical moment.
Now comes a month away from the limelight for Garnacho. He’ll be working hard with Ten Hag and the rest of the lads who aren’t participating in the World Cup. This is another month where the player can develop and grow, potentially starting to build rapport with Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho – a front three we could well see upon the resumption of domestic football at the back end of December.
Remember the name, Alejandro Garnacho.
