Man United are set to be without left-back Alex Telles for pretty much the remainder of pre-season.
Last summer, Manchester United’s move to sign Alex Telles from FC Porto was nothing short of a masterstroke.
The left-back did his job when called upon. Though what was most impressive was the positive impact that signing Telles had on Luke Shaw. The Englishman took that competition personally – and the end result was a Shaw who is arguably the best in the world in his position right now.
Sadly, though, Telles won’t be available for what feels like the remainder of pre-season tour. The Brazilian has twisted his ankle in training and he’ll be out for a few weeks. The injury blow was confirmed by Solskjaer in his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s game vs QPR.
Check out what the gaffer had to say on the Telles injury here:
“Unfortunately, Alex slipped and he twisted his ankle so he’ll be out for a few weeks. We’re hoping that it’s not going to be too bad but he’ll be out for a little while.” Solskjaer told ManUtd.com.
Obviously, this is far from ideal. The importance of getting a good pre-season under your belt cannot be understated, while it now looks like Telles will be limping into the serious stuff next month.
The Reds now only have three friendly fixtures left, the last of which coming on August 7th against Everton. If Telles is sidelined for a few weeks, he’ll miss all of those warm-up matches – without having any starts under his belt ahead of the Premier League opener.
With Shaw still on holiday for another week or so, this felt like a good chance for Telles to prove his worth. Sadly, that opportunity has now been taken away from the 28-year-old.
It means United will now have to solider on with Brandon Williams in that left-back role during pre-season and who knows, there’s every chance the Harpurhey-born full-back could start our Premier League opener for a number of reasons. His loan move away will definitely be put on hold, that’s for sure.
