Around eighteen months ago, Manchester United became the architects of their own downfall, though they wouldn’t know it at the time.
The Red Devils were on the up, our youngsters were flourishing under Jose Mourinho – until the self-proclaimed Special One took the decision to sign Alexis Sanchez on mega-money from Arsenal.
Well, his piano playing is as good as it got and his struggles have been evident. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he has fallen further down the pecking order and it’s no surprise that without him, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will back to their brilliant best against Chelsea this Sunday.
For Sanchez, it feels that a move away is in his best interests. According to The Times, that’s exactly what the out-of-favour 30-year-old wants. United’s #7 has until September 2nd to find a potential suitor, with Italy emerging as ‘the most likely destination’ at this point in time.
It’s a shame because Sanchez at Arsenal was amongst the best players in the country. Maybe the timing of the move was just all wrong, and who knows, if he started off well then things could have been different. Injuries have certainly played their part, too, though putting the Chilean on over £500,000-a-week never seemed like the smartest idea…
