Alvaro Fernandez will head to Benfica on a loan deal, with the full details of the transfer now explained by Fabrizio Romano.
This January transfer window was always going to be one with plenty of turnover at Manchester United. INEOS are now in charge, with the new part-owners looking to impart their wisdom on the club and turn their future around.
With a lack of Champions League football on the table, players were always expected to leave. Donny van de Beek has gone out on loan. As has Jadon Sancho. Now, it’s the turn of Alvaro Fernandez.
There have been rumours swirling about the Spaniard’s future, with a loan move now in the offing for Fernandez.
He will head to SL Benfica over in Portugal, with Fabrizio Romano now explaining the full details of the transfer.
Yes, Benfica will have an option to buy, for a pitiful £5.5m fee. The deal will automatically become permanent if Fernandez plays over 50% of their games as a starter.
United do have a buy back clause, while also having a matching rights and sell-on clause, in the event that Fernandez does move elsewhere after Benfica.

Honestly, I’m surprised the fees being mentioned are so low. Fernandez is a mega-talented footballer who has massive potential. With Tyrell Malacia consistently injured this term, I genuinely thought there would be a way into the side for the left-back – though that hasn’t happened.
Luke Shaw is the fierce competition that Fernandez would face, though given the Englishman’s injury record, I would give the young Spaniard a fair shot.
My only explanation is that Ten Hag doesn’t fancy Fernandez as a player. It’s backed up by the loan move for Sergio Reguilon before the turn of the year. I’m disappointed that he hasn’t even been given a chance to prove his worth.
