Alvaro Fernandez signs new Man United contract, seals loan move

Alvaro Fernandez has had a busy 24 hours. He’s moved to Preston on loan, while also signing a new Man United contract.

Just a few days ago, Alvaro Fernandez was spotted in conversation with Preston North End officials, while also watching the club play a friendly match.

At that time, loan interest was rumoured, with Fernandez yet to make a decision on where his future would lie.

Well, over the last 24 hours, United have confirmed that Fernandez has joined Preston North End for the 2022/23 campaign. He’s also put pen on paper on a fresh United contract.

The 19-year-old’s new Reds contract will run until 2024, with the option for a further year. Basically, he’s tied down to the club for the next three seasons.

Fernandez, who won the Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year, looked sharp for United’s U23s last season. Hence, he was ready for a step up in quality. Now, he’ll (hopefully) play regularly at the Championship level over the next twelve months.

Fernandez is super talented. Sadly though, staying at United and getting game-time in the first-team was never a realistic possibility.

Luke Shaw, Alex Telles and now Tyrell Malacia are all ahead of the ex-Real Madrid man in the pecking order. It was always going to be tough for the teenager to beat out that competition, despite being immensely talented.

This loan move to Preston will massively benefit everyone. Fernandez will start with regularity in a supremely tough division. He’ll come back a much-improved player next summer.

No doubt we’ll also see him on pre-season tour in twelve months’ time, too.

Best of luck, Alvaro!
