It wasn’t that long ago when Manchester United were heavily linked with a move to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea. However, as we all know, Jose Mourinho opted for Romelu Lukaku instead; with the big Belgian scoring his first goal against Real Salt Lake on Monday.
Now, Chelsea have become the club that won Morata’s signature, despite the fact that they too were heavily interested in Lukaku – a player we stole from right under their noses.
Although I may be slightly biased, I’m firmly of the opinion that we have the better deal. Lukaku is proven in the Premier League and has scored over 100 top level goals more than the new Chelsea man.
However, that didn’t stop Morata answering questions about just how close he came to moving to the Theatre of Dreams. In typical fashion, he gave a very diplomatic answer.
“I don’t know, the most important thing is I’m here playing for Chelsea. Finally, I’m here.” Morata is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
You hardly expect him to come out and say that he’s gutted about not getting a United move, but when reports suggest that he actually dyed his hair red as he was so excited, it makes you think otherwise.
What’s going to be interesting from here on out is watching the pair compete week-in-week-out in the Premier League. I’m pretty certain that Lukaku will finish the season with more goals (barring an injury disaster of course), because you simply cannot put a price on experience. It’s certainly going to be intriguing, though.
