Angel Gomes views a potential Man United return as a long-term ambition.
Manchester United Football Club have always given youth a chance. Cast your mind back seven years ago, to that iconic moment when Angel Gomes came on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney, becoming the youngest ever player to represent the Red Devils.
Sadly for the English attacking midfielder, he remained on the periphery at United for a few seasons without ever being able to break through. A move to Lille followed, where Gomes would begin to find his feet in the professional game.
Over the last week, Gomes has earned his first England cap, looking sharp for the Three Lions. As you’d expect, rumours about his future are now starting to swirl.
According to Jack Flintham on the MEN live blog (09:28 timestamp), the 24-year-old attacker ‘clearly sees’ a move back to United as a ‘long-term’ ambition.
The attacking is currently out of contract at Lille this summer, while any potential overseas admirer of Gomes could snap him up on a free transfer next summer.
Check out what journalist Jack Flintham said on the MEN United news live blog here:
I’d be more than happy to welcome Gomes back on a free transfer. It’d add extra quality to United’s attacking group, which has proven to be inconsistent over the last couple of seasons.
If the Red Devils can snap up the Englishman for nothing, on a relatively low wage, it could be an astute piece of business. However, while Bruno Fernandes is around, Gomes would have to be content with dipping in and out of the starting line-up. I’m not sure that’s something he’d be content with at this important stage of his career.
Right now, I’d give this move a slim chance at happening purely due to the fact he wouldn’t be playing as often as he’d like, though I would like to see it happen.
