When talking about Manchester United and talent, the chatter is always about the Mason Greenwood’s and Tahith Chong’s of the world. However, forget about Angel Gomes at your peril.
The 5’3 attacking-midfielder has always been put to the back of people’s minds (I’m guilty of that, too), but yesterday, he showed the world his insane capabilities. Remember this is a youngster whom Jose Mourinho handed a debut to aged just sixteen.
Now 18, two years older and wiser, Gomes has the chance to become an integral part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. It all starts with having a good pre-season, my has this young man impressed.
It’s his brilliant movement, the speed on the ball, the ability to pick out and deliver a chance, and the way he takes chances so well. His goal against Tottenham Hotspur was an absolute thing of beauty, the one-two with Juan Mata is something us fans have seldom seen recently.
As you’d imagine, the young man was absolutely buzzing to net his first Red Devils goal, taking to social media to send a positive message to the fans in the process. This is some photo, by the way…
Although smaller in stature, I see Gomes as a Mata with speed and the ability to press. Solskjaer’s new system is tailor-made for Gomes to flourish and hopefully, this is just the start of a long and fruitful Old Trafford career for the teenager.
The talent is there, he’s shown Solskjaer what he can do. Now it’s time for the manager to repay that faith.
