Anthony Elanga has been surprisingly added to Manchester United’s Europa League squad list.
As Manchester United gear up for a pretty big double-header against Granada, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has added another player to his eligible squad.
The story comes from the official website, with Anthony Elanga now available for selection.
United have added the 18-year-old to their Europa League squad amid injury problems and if called upon, it would be a full senior debut for Elanga.
Anthony Martial’s knee problem has likely ended his season, while Marcus Rashford limped off against Brighton & Hove Albion this Sunday. Throw an unfit Juan Mata into the mix. Suddenly, United were three wingers short and they had to find reinforcements from somewhere. Elanga has been deemed good enough to be that guy.
Daniel James, Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo could be the only other wide options for Solskjaer so it made sense to draft in Elanga, who was in brilliant form before picking up a pretty serious injury a few months ago.
Now, he’s fighting fit and ready to make an impact. What a moment it would be for him if Elanga was given a debut in a European quarter-final. I absolutely wouldn’t bet against it either, though it would likely be off the substitutes bench.
Once again, this just goes to show that Solskjaer isn’t afraid to stick youth in the team if they’re good enough. Elanga will no doubt be excited at the prospect of making his senior debut this week, looking to repay the faith placed in him by his manager.
Even if he doesn’t get minutes, it’s a great learning curve for Elanga who would have been really low on morale following that injury that kept him sidelined for a couple of months. One thing is for certain, this call-up is more than deserved.
