Anthony Elanga has picked up bad habits at Man United, according to Paul Parker.
Manchester United Football Club have a squad that looks very different to the one that finished the 2021/22 season. After all, that was inevitable given how poor the Red Devils looked week-in-week-out.
Erik ten Hag’s high-pressure system requires a different sort of player. United need their attackers to lead the charge from the front. It’s why Cristiano Ronaldo looks less effective, while the likes of Marcus Rashford look far sharper.
Another player who has seen a notable increase in minutes under Ten Hag is Anthony Elanga. The Swede would start against Liverpool and Leicester City, though he has since dropped back to the bench following the arrival of Antony.
I’ve been quietly pleased with the work done by Elanga, though one ex-Red isn’t best pleased with what the United star is doing. Paul Parker states that Elanga has picked up ‘bad habits’, while also admitting that he needs a ‘period away’ from playing.
Check out what was said about Anthony Elanga by Paul Parker here:
“Elanga has picked up bad habits. Wants to fall over, wants to contest everything with the referee.” Parker told My Betting Sites last week.
“He needs a period away from playing.”
“Maybe going out on loan and understanding what life is like away from Manchester United might wake him up as a young player to where he is.”
Honestly, this feels a little harsh. Elanga is still looking a little light-weight, sure, but to basically call him a diver isn’t really fair in our opinion.
Elanga isn’t someone who is going to start every week. He knows that. Particularly as he still looks to polish off some aspects of his game.
A loan wouldn’t be the worst idea, sure, but right now, United just aren’t deep enough in the wide areas to allow that to happen. I’m also not sure he needs waking up, as Parker suggests.
I get that Elanga isn’t the most effective player. He’s not someone who is going to guarantee 20+ goals a season at this stage in his career, but why call him out publicly like this? It just feels a little unwarranted and a tad harsh.
