Anthony Martial could earn himself a late World Cup call-up for France.
Manchester United have sixteen players in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. That’s amongst the most players from one single club taking part in the major international tournament.
That list could well be about to grow by one. Sadly, yesterday, Karim Benzema picked up a serious injury, meaning he will not feature for Les Bleus over in Qatar.
According to L’Equipe, with the translation coming via the Metro, a certain United star is ‘among the options’ being considered for a late World Cup call-up; Anthony Martial.
Didier Deschamps has until Monday night to select a replacement for Martial. There’s no guarantee he will actually bring someone in to replace Benzema, with the option of going into the tournament a man light another possibility.
Martial, along with Wissam Ben Yedder and Moussa Diaby are considered the front-runners to earn a late call-up.
OTF’s verdict
It has been a weird start to the season for Martial. Whenever called upon, the Frenchman has looked like arguably the best player on the pitch. He’s also had his own injury issues.
No sooner was Martial back available, he’d pick up another injury that’d keep him sidelined for another few weeks. Overcoming that proved to be problematic for the forward.
I’d argue that it’s probably better from a United standpoint if Martial does miss this World Cup. This month off can be like his pre-season, where he works hard to ensure that the injury issues are behind him, meaning he’s fit for the all-important second half of our season.
That said, if Martial was called up, you can’t really argue if he accepts the invitation to play for his country at a major tournament.
