Man United are looking set to let Anthony Martial walk away for free this summer.

It’s no secret that Manchester United will need to continue the clearout this coming summer, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to stamp his authority on this squad.

Gone are the days (hopefully) of this club wasting money, overpaying for average players and simply not competing for the major honours on a year-in-year-out basis. First and foremost, players have to be moved on, in order to create space in the squad to bring in new faces.

Anthony Martial. Remember him? The Frenchman has barely played under Erik ten Hag due to numerous injuries. Despite joining the club with promise aplenty almost a decade ago now, the ex-AS Monaco man has not kicked on.

Now, according to Football Insider, it is being claimed that the 28-year-old Reds star could have already played his last game for the club.

United hold the option to extend his deal by a further year, though instead, they’re going to allow his contract to wind down this coming summer, hence, he’ll be allowed to walk away for free.

The club are ‘eager’ to significantly reduce their wage bill, with Martial’s £250,000-a-week salary now set to be off their books within the next five months.

Martial is currently dealing with a groin injury that was expected to keep him out until April. However, by the time he’s trained for a few weeks and gotten back up to match speed, the season could be pretty much over. Hence, he may never pull on the red jersey again.

If you look at Martial’s overall record, he has close to 150 goal contributions in just over 315 games. It’s not a bad return by any stretch. However, it’s the lackadaisical attitude coupled with his constant injuries. He is not worth anywhere close to what he’s currently earning.

It does make sense to allow him to walk away for free. There’s absolutely no getting away from that.
