Anthony Martial is back in contention to play this weekend, according to the boss.
Manchester United have some serious concerns and problems to deal with in regard to Anthony Martial. The Frenchman just cannot stay fit, leaving Erik ten Hag a man short in a key area of the field.
After an impressive pre-season, it’s pretty gutting to see Martial’s body failing him at this important stage in his career. No doubt the manager is now having second thoughts about whether he’s the right long-term fit.
Wout Weghorst has done a stellar job as a back-up option, though now could well be Martial’s time to shine.
United boss Ten Hag confirmed the injury boost, admitting that the star is now available for selection again from this weekend – though he urged caution.
Martial has been missing for a fair while now, so it’s highly unlikely he’ll be thrown straight in at the deep end.
When asked at his press conference if Martial could play at the weekend, the boss replied:
“Yeah, but I think, all the time, we had a good plan and until now it [didn’t] always [work well].
“But he is on his way back, he is back in training, but we will be cautious, yeah.”
No doubt the Frenchman’s presence back on the bench will be a welcome one for the whole dressing room. We all know what he’s capable of when in the mood. We’ve already seen glimpses of it this season.
At this point, though, it’s now fully down to the player and how badly he wants it. Will he put his body on the line in order to show that he has what it takes to succeed here in Manchester? It really is the last chance saloon, particularly with United consistently linked with a move to bring in another striker this summer.
Martial has no option but to finish the season strong, or else his place in the team may no longer be a gaurantee.
