Anthony Martial ‘expected to be sold’ to make way for Sancho: report

It looks as though Anthony Martial could be the major casualty as Manchester United close in on a deal to sign Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United seem to be closing in on a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. With a little bit of luck, we may hear something formal from the Reds over the next few days.

With that, comes expected casualties. After all, there’s only so many spaces in a first-team squad with not enough minutes to go around. It seems as though Anthony Martial may be the odd man out in that regard.

That’s according to The Mirror, who state that the 25-year-old United star is ‘expected to be sold’ this summer, with Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur, showing interest.

Martial struggled massively in the 2020/21 campaign, failing to make any real impact in games of importance. That inevitably led to the Frenchman not making Les Bleus’ European Championship squad for the tournament this summer.

In all honesty, Martial always felt like the one who’d go. It was never going to be Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood, while Amad and Daniel James are still developing as footballers.

Factor in Martial’s failure to develop and take his game to that next level and you’ve got the perfect recipe of someone departing a club with title aspirations.

However, I’m not so sure Tottenham will be Martial’s destination. Right now, they’re manager-less and although Daniel Levy may like United’s number nine, there’s no guarantee the incoming manager feels the same.

At this stage, United are probably looking to cash in on their asset while Martial still has some value. A Martial sale could probably generate about half the cash needed to secure Sancho’s signature, which is a fair chunk of cash…
