Anthony Martial is ready to start games for Man United again, according to the boss.

It goes without saying, Manchester United’s biggest issue this season has been scoring goals. The Old Trafford club have been pretty lacklustre in that area of the field – outside of Marcus Rashford.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure also played a part. He didn’t want to be here, though that did leave United light in a key area of the field. Wout Weghorst has done a decent job, though it seems clear that he’s not the long-term option.

Another player Erik ten Hag hasn’t been able to rely upon is Anthony Martial. The Frenchman looked super sharp in pre-season, though he’s spent most of the campaign dealing with niggling injury issues.

The good news? He’s on the mend and has featured off the subs bench over the last couple of weeks.

Now, Ten Hag has confirmed the United attacker is ‘ready to start’ for the Reds again following injury.

“I think he (Martial) is ready to start a game, but the front line against Brentford did really well and we decided to continue that against Everton.” Ten Hag told the media, per Goal.

“They did really well again, and the advantage is we can bring Anthony Martial slowly back into the team, give him minutes and get him used to high intensity. But against Everton he was ready to start again.”

It does feel convenient that Martial comes back just as soon as Marcus Rashford is lost with injury. Although it would have been ideal to see the pair play together, at least United aren’t a man down in a key area of the field.

Whether Martial can match Rashford’s production is a different question entirely. If he can stay fit for a prolonged period, I’d tip the ex-AS Monaco man to finish the season strong – though I have no faith in his body holding up.

It’s disappointing because Martial looks like he has what it takes to flourish in this system. However, every day that he’s out injured for, Ten Hag will lose a little more faith in the number nine. Honestly, I fear for his United career if he picks up another injury before this season is out…
