Anthony Martial is out of the Omonia game with injury, but we’ll see if he’s available for the Newcastle match this weekend.

Earlier today, we covered a story which claimed that Anthony Martial was doubtful for the Omonia game with injury.

The Frenchman seemingly tweaked his back in the warm-up of the game against Everton at the weekend, and had to be subbed off in the first half as a result.

Obviously, losing Martial was a crying shame. The attacker has looked nothing short if sensational in every single game he’s played in under Erik ten Hag, though he’s struggled for fitness badly.

Now, we know that the United star is out of the Omonia game with the aforementioned back problem. However, he’s only doubtful for the Newcastle game this weekend, with the gaffer admitting ‘we will see’ what his availability is like for that one.

Here’s what Ten Hag had to say on the Martial injury news here:

“Not [training] today, we will see before Sunday,” Ten Hag told the official club website, when asked for the latest on Martial.

“I have several talks with him about that [this season’s injury problems],” Erik added.

“It’s really disappointing for him. But I think all the minutes he played well, even on Sunday. He made the assist for Antony and played very well. He fell out and it’s frustrating for him.”

It’s obviously bitterly disappointing, though there comes a point when you have no choice but to question whether Martial is becoming somewhat a liability.

If you cannot stay fit for any sort of time, then that’s all you can put it down to. You can have all the talent and ability on the planet. It’s worthless if your body doesn’t hold up.

It’s also worth noting that if you start the campaign injured, it’s super tough to come back from that over the course of a long season. I wonder whether Martial will ever be fully fit this term – however, if he doesn’t go to the World Cup, that will give him a month to get back to 100%.

It’s a delicate situation. We’ve all seen how good Martial looks under Ten Hag, so it’s natural to want to play him as soon as possible. Maybe United should approach this situation rather cautiously for the next couple of weeks, as desperate as we all are to watch Martial shine.
