Manchester United broke the transfer record for a teenager when they made the £36million swoop for Anthony Martial, with the French striker signing a four-year contract with the option for a fifth. The 19-year old has met the media since the move, and revealed his ideal position.
Martial told FFF: “Van Gaal asked me my preferred position. I prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions.”
With him taking the #9 jersey you feel that Louis van Gaal also sees him as a striker in the long-term. However with his faith in Wayne Rooney not faltering, it looks as though Martial will probably be deployed out wide for the time being.
The central role seems to be the one he is best suited to. He is an excellent finisher and makes intelligent runs, but he also has the pace and the brain to play out wide for the time being.
Anthony Martial’s talent is clear. United beat the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Chelsea to his signature and that alone shows just how highly regarded he is.
