Yesterday, Anthony Martial lasted just eleven minutes at the AON Training Complex before being sent home.
The Frenchman would miss Manchester United’s trip to Southampton, leaving us all perplexed at the time. Afterwards, we’d learn that Anthony Martial was ill and he’d remain in the team-hotel rather than turning up at St Mary’s with the squad.
As of yesterday, it seems Martial is still struggling. According to the Manchester Evening News, the United star would be sent home from training on Monday, being deemed not fit enough to take part after just eleven minutes…
The good news is that this is just a bout of sickness, rather than a muscular injury that’ll keep him out in the long-term. The bad news? We’re now about 36 hours away from taking on last season’s Champions League finalists and it helps when you’ve got a fully fit squad to choose from.
Hopefully, Martial will be available to play at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, though at this stage, I’m not holding my breath.
So what’s the plan if Martial doesn’t make it?
Well, you cannot look past Edinson Cavani, surely? He’ll be taking on his old employers with a point to prove, while going into the match feeling supremely confident.
Then you have Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, both of whom can be lethal on their day though both could desperately do with a goal to boost their confidence a little bit.
Yes, it’d be nice having Martial as an option off the substitutes bench, but if he’s ill and it’s contagious you have to keep him away from the squad. I don’t doubt he’ll be back involved soon but the last thing United need is a sickness bug tearing through the dressing room.
