Anthony Martial is set to make his injury return vs Newcastle United this weekend.
Manchester United haven’t really had a reliable striker all season long, which makes their debut season under Erik ten Hag even more impressive.
The Old Trafford club have played some lovely football at times, in spite of not having a genuine front man who will guarantee 25+ goals a season.
Cristiano Ronaldo bailed on the Reds early, while Wout Weghorst has done well, though he’s by no means the long-term solution.
Then we have Anthony Martial, who looked super sharp during pre-season tour. Sadly, injuries have totally derailed his season, with the Frenchman struggling for any sort of consistency.
He’d come back for a couple of games, play well and then pick up another problem. It’s nothing but sad, particularly at this stage in his career. There’s only so much patience Ten Hag has and if these problems aren’t behind him soon, United may well look to move in a fresh direction.
Well, according to the official club website and Ten Hag himself, the United star is ‘in line’ to make a return from injury vs Newcastle United this weekend.
During his pre-match presser, this is what the boss had to say in full:
“He is training. So, for two weeks now,” Ten Hag told the media.
“I think he can be in the squad for Sunday.”
It’s a weird situation. Martial has a serious opportunity to finish the season strong and make that starting role his own going into next season. However, these are fine margins. If the Frenchman picks up another problem and is ruled out for another month or so, he could well find himself being sold this summer.
I’m of the belief that Martial truly is at the last chance saloon right now. He has to prove that he has what it takes to stay healthy for a prolonged period of time, if only to show that he’s worthy of a place in this squad.
Either way, as we edge closer and closer to the summer and the Harry Kane/Victor Osimhen rumours keep swirling, the pressure only mounts on Martial.
