Anthony Martial set to miss Brighton game with injury

Man United have been dealt a huge blow, just a few days before their season opener.

Erik ten Hag’s early pre-season signals had us all believing that Manchester United’s front three for their opening game against Brighton was nailed on.

It looked for all the world like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial would link up and spearhead our attack. Well, those plans have been swiftly scuppered.

According to The Athletic, United have been dealt a big injury blow, with Martial set to miss the game vs Brighton on Sunday.

Their story claims that Martial will be absent with a hamstring issue, which he seemingly picked up in the game vs Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

The severity of the problem isn’t yet fully clear, though it’s described as ‘minor’. It is hoped Martial could come back against Brentford in our second game of the campaign. Failing that, his next chance to feature would be vs Liverpool on August 22nd.

This leaves United mightily short up front, with Martial the only recognised striker who played regularly during pre-season tour. Obviously, Cristiano Ronaldo is another option, though he actually doesn’t want to be here and is woefully short in terms of match fitness.

If I had to make a guess, Rashford will now lead the line here, with Anthony Elanga being drafted into the line-up and playing on the flank.

Timing-wise, it couldn’t have been worse for Ten Hag, with Martial really impressing on tour and looking like he was a guarantee to lead the line. The harsh reality is that he may never get that starting job back if Ronaldo starts, because you know the Portugal international will score goals.

There was some better news in regards to Sancho, who is now back available for selection following illness.

Who do you think will replace Anthony Martial in the Man United XI vs Brighton? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
